Meet the Flockers!
There’s nothing quite like hanging out with the chickens, ducks, and turkeys on the Buffalo Acres Homestead. It’s so therapeutic, if we could bottle it, we’d make a million bucks in no time.
Chickens

Our chickens are the most amazing creatures. I love watching them cluck around the chicken run and get this… they make me breakfast everyday! Not only do chickens provide an abundance of fresh, nutritious eggs that are higher in vitamins and minerals and lower in cholesterol… they are also terrific at pest control. They will eat bugs and spiders and then provide a valuable source of nutrients for your compost pile; creating rich, fertile soil for your garden. Of course, when they are beyond their egg laying years they can also provide your family with wonderful, healthy meat! But my favorite thing about our chickens? They all have these unique personalities and just hanging out with them is a positive, stress relieving experience.

Ducks
Have you ever had a duck egg? They lay large, nutritious eggs, which are rich in fat and protein. Not only do they taste amazingly creamy and delicious, they are also ideal for baking. Like chickens, ducks offer great pest control and their manure is an excellent natural fertilizer that enriches soil with plant nutrients but better yet, they require simpler housing, often preferring to be outdoors, and are excellent at foraging. Ducks are generally hardier than chickens too, with good resistance to heat and cold, and are less prone to diseases like mites, lice, and bird flu! Duck meat is also a source of lean, protein-rich food.

Turkeys
A lot of people think turkeys are…well…ugly! But not me. I think they look amazing with their puffed out feathers and different colored faces. Did you know that turkeys change the color of their faces based on their mood? Crazy huh? It’s all due to blood flow and collagen fibers in the face and neck. Bright red can mean anger or aggression while blue indicates that the turkey is relaxed and calm. A white crown often signifies strong excitement, such as when a male turkey is approaching a hen… Hubba-Hubba! Even hens, which aren’t as flashy as toms, are really beautiful birds. Like ducks, their eggs are rich and creamy and there’s nothing like a fresh turkey right off the farm for Thanksgiving dinner. We raise Narragansett and Royal Palm heritage turkeys.
